Yesterday morning was snowy in parts of the northeast, it was warm so it was pretty slushy and grip was decent but enough slip to make it fun. What a perfect day to take your rally inspired vehicle out for a spin.

Kinja'd!!!

As I was cruising along enjoying my own ride I suddenly found myself coming up fast on a slow moving blue sedan. Thinking it a Camry I slowed to a crawl behind it when I noticed a badge I had not expected, the mark of the monster energy drink, the sign of the flat brimmed hat and the symbol of rally dominance from 1993 onwards was right there in front of me, barely crawling along.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Now don’t get me wrong, I still think the WRX is a very capable car, I just couldn’t help but ponder the fact that subaru has pumped enough of these out with enough brand recognition that they’re no longer exclusively in the hands of hoons and it makes me for one a bit sad

I complete agree and understand. Though I’m not a Subaru guy, the same thing is present in Chevy with both the Super Sport option and more to Camaro’s only, the Z/28.

I’ll admit it’s unlikely, I’m just giving them the benefit of the doubt.

10:1 odds that he is still on summers and has no traction. I have also found that there isn’t that much overlap between the vape crowd and the rally hoons.

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2014/05/subaru-wrx-sti-sales-figures-usa.html
Subaru has has significant growth in the US market for both the vanilla Impreza and the wrx/sti lineup. Check that out - 8000 for the wrx/sti in 2010, and in 2016 33,000. 4x the amount.

That being said, I live in a hot climate, and if I took a wrx up to the snow I’d still be very very careful, despite my multiple year experience driving with symmetrical AWD.

I’m not complaining because they were do 30 in a 35, they were doing literally 15 in a 35 that people normally do 45 on when roads are clear.

I think they’ve finally made them visually subtle enough that a wider variety of folks will buy them. While the 1st and 2nd gen WRX once made my young heart go pitter-patter, there is no way that I would own one now. However, the current model is something that my 32 year old self could buy and enjoy the turbocharged AWD goodness without sticking out in the crowd. For that very reason, I could imagine that not everyone buys them to play rally car with anymore.
